Npolarman, 69

After living in Paris, San Juan, Lagos, Moscow, Brussels, Almaty and Honolulu, I followed my ex-wife and our two daughters to Washington four years ago. It's a tad boring since I'm interested in neither power nor money, but I regularly travel to nice places like Nassau, Tarawa and Majuro (last year) and Fiji, Christmas Island, Honolulu, Paris and San Juan this year. The free in free-lancing is pure joy: I have no boss and I can pursue the stories I care about, which usually revolve around the science and ecology of the oceans. I write about overfishing, marine reserves, coral reefs and sea-level rise and acidification caused by global warming. Some of my stories have an investigative component and have been funded by grants from the Fund for Investigative Journalism. I share a 23-foot sailboat docked in Annapolis and drive a convertible. I read the NYRB, the New Yorker, the NY Times and Doonesbury see the films of Woody Allen, Alexander Payne and Wim Wenders. I don't have a television. I speak five languages, grew up in Paris and cook like a Frenchman, not an asset when trying to feed girls of 7 and 9. I also spearfish, ski and ride, and often end the day with an online episode of Jon Stewart.
