It's true! There is no intellectualism available. It's all a sham! Pity!

Nothing is dead unless we allow others to dismiss it from our minds. Closely related to intellect is intelligence. One does not breed the other yet failure to recognize the symbiosis seems to be a curious result of fracturing of our society.

Intellectual arrogance is partly responsible. Intellectuals with more questions and no answer, scientists who thought they couldn't be mistaken...
And ultimately, while intellectualism is interesting and necessary, it does not lead to Happiness on it's own.
It's all about balance. Right now the weight is on the spiritual/emotional side, but no doubt it will swing back, when they realise that they're not achieving Happiness either.
The bane of being Human is to forever Balance on the pointed needle of Consciousness.

`I once knew a blind man who claimed there was no color left in the world, and a deaf man who claimed that there was no more music and many a politician who claimed that they had vastly improved the lot of humanity. I think each of us is rich in his own poverty.

`I think it is simply a matter of consumerism being easier. Statistically, there always have been more subscribers to consumerism than intellectualism... there is a more immediate reward (or so it seems). With so many more subscribers to consumerism, won't we see it much more everywhere?

`Spaggy... and spiral ..those are great answers I believe. Overall I find myself muttering the same things. We've seen a real decline in the culture of the US at least. Factors I see at play:
* A belief that there is no reason to be motivated to grow. The government will take care of us
* An exaltation of arrogant ignoramuses, largely through the medium OF the internet; facilitating people's childish behavior with anonymity. I did a song called 'virtual fame' some years back that talks about this in a colorful way.
But basically people feel exalted because they have partners in crime who pat them on the back or turn the other way whenever they are proven wrong about something.
* Exaltation of ----s, rap 'artists' who spew a few words like 'yo', 'ho' the 'n' word and various colorful descriptions of gang violence etc. etc. through our wonderful media sources.
Anyway yeah who needs to complete a college degree or even teach a topic well IN a college from some of what I saw going down in a History class I recall in college and some others . It's all about who you know, not what.

Silly grown-ups. You're all so cynical.
It's not really a question of whether intellectualism is there or not, but if those who value it wish to do anything with it.
Hedonism, or rather, nihilistic hedonism (in reference to the previously mentioned rappers) works as a value because it's a means to its own ends. It's fail-proof.
(Oh, and another thing about all them rappers: their songs are a self-depiction of success and triumph vs what they've percieved as an impoverishment all their lives. You get dumb songs about riches and women because they've been effectively deprived of the sense of entitlement that inherently affluent people have gotten to know all their lives. Stop mocking a culture when you don't care about understanding it.)
Being observant and conscious (intellectual) about things demands that you do things with that ability. So you get a bunch of bitter people whining about how things should be and whatnot.
Why do any of you assume because whichever intellectual didn't personally notify you of their intellectuallism and their uses of it, that such persons don't exist?
A major flaw with caring to be "smart" is that you begin to think that being smart entitles others to validate your intellect. But like anyone else you're only as special as you affect others.
In short, it's there, but if it's there, it doesn't exist for personal validation. It should be providing potential for society, quietly and modestly.

`You go Rofigo! I agree whole-heartledly. For some reason people get the impression the it's only been recently that education and intellectual motivation have been declining in the United States. That's not true at all. For thousands of years there have always been different levels of intellectual curiousity and motivation. Some people are moderately motivated, some people are aggressively purusing their curiousity, and others....well, they just sit there while lift passes by. Just because you think you're intellectual (you very well may be) doesn't mean the person next to you isn't...perhaps they're just "smart" in a different subject area...they're street smart or know an ungodly amount of information about cars- how to take apart an engine or they can tell what's wrong with an engine just by listening to it. You may be more academically smart...expressing your knowledge of Kant or Quantum Physics.... intellect comes in many forms.

I think you're right. From reading many profiles on this site, clearly many don't understand what intellectualism means.

`In order to find intellectuals you could go to the local public library, make friends with one or more of the librarians, and (somehow) persuade them to use library computer records to research the user activity of books and subjects you are interested in, resulting in identifying library card holders who have been taking out and reading those materials, from which you may infer their intellect. Then you will have to devise a way to contact them. Try not to let them think you are stalking them. But seriously, if you are on this site you will never get them.

Come on over to Native American Passions if you would like a daily does of that, it would be refreshing to have other well spoken individuals, to get the Forum system back on track. It is dismaying when a member authors a topic of substance that is well written, only to be mocked by others that have nothing to say that complements what was written before them.I am sorry if this has nothing to do really with the topic, but come on over,I am sure each and everyone has something pertinent to contribute.

I think it was Television - it already killed the Radio Star.
